“CanadiEM Presents” Video Interview Series – Hot Wings with Dr. Brent Thoma

If you watch YouTube, you may have some familiarity with the idea of an “experiential interview.” In this format, the participants take part in some sort of an activity. This serves to create an intermittent distraction, where the natural personalities of each person become apparent, and the viewer has a more intimate reaction to the content, thereby keeping them engaged and hopefully increasing knowledge retention. As far as we know, this style of content has not yet been brought into medical education.

This new CanadiEM series features Emergency Medicine figures from around Canada while they participate in some sort of fun ice-breaking activity. First up is a challenge inspired by a very popular YouTube series called “Hot Ones” by First We Feast. How can Dr. Brent Thoma from the University of Saskatchewan manage increasingly spicy chicken wings while talking about his academic interests?

Moving forward, we are assembling a team to continue to produce video content similar to this. Unfortunately, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, in person interviews are impossible and our future plans are uncertain. We hope to create more for our viewers as soon as possible; stay tuned!
